The term ‘mental skills training’ can be both intimidating and off-putting. In my experience, as soon as the word mental enters the ring, it overshadows all other content and can immediately close people off to the idea of any form of engagement. Countless studies have shown that mental skills training and sport psychology are quite often negatively viewed by coaches and athletes alike, and while this perception seems to be diminishing over time, many coaches and athletes still do not feel comfortable with participating in mental skills training.
The purpose of this blog post is to not only make you more familiar and comfortable with what mental skills training really is, but to (hopefully) help you realise how it can be of benefit to you.
As an athlete, you physically train hard to allow you to be at the top of your game. But what if told you that by improving your mental skills, you would be able to enhance your overall athletic performance?
So, what happens when you receive mental skills training? We don’t sit down and discuss how you feel and why you might be feeling this way (unless that’s what you want to do!) You’re a runner? Let’s go for a run, have a chat about where you think you are in terms of your performance; how you think you might be able to improve or what your strengths might be. If you play football, we’ll go for a kick about and have a chat about the beautiful game. From here, we can draw up a plan of where you would like to be and how to get you there.
See? Mental skills training isn’t as scary as you might have thought! It can help you to prepare for competitions or big performances, as well as with injury rehabilitation, improving your focus, helping develop lasting fundamental relationships (with coaches and teammates), promotes and strengthens resilience and mental toughness and developing emotional intelligence; all key attributes which distinguish between good athletes and top athletes.
